Last year XXL Magazine dedicated it’s december issue to what they called the 10 Freshmen who were about to take over hip-hop in 2009. They had Kid Cudi, Asher Roth, Wale, Mickey Factz, Charles Hamilton & a few other up & coming mcs that they thought would be next to blow on the cover. Their selection was not bad at all but they missed one guy who is taking the rap game by storm.
Introducing the rapper with the biggest buzz without a record deal: Drake. Altough he is Young Money affiliated – Weezy & Drake already have collaborated on a more than a few mixtape cuts as well the Young Money single Every Girl and they re currently touring together on Lil Wayne’s “I Am Music Tour” – Drake remains unsigned at the moment. Universal Motown has been trying hard to sign the kid from Canada (he’s from Toronto like Kardinal Offishall) and he was recently in the studio with Jay-Z & Just Blaze but he is not rushing to sign with anybody.
So if you don’t already have it download Drake’s latest mixtape So Far So Gone and you ll understand why everybody is going crazy for the kid. It’s practically the only thing i ve been listening to since it came out in february. It just sounds so different than anything out there. From the futuristic sophisticated production (courtesy of new comers 40 & Boi-1da and mr Kanye West on one track) to Drake’s rapping (he’s an ill lyricist) and singing ability (dude can sing his ass off). It’s really like a musical journey through Drake’s rise to success & fame. When I listen to Drake’s mixtape, it’s like i m watching Entourage.
Don’t believe the hype? Check this video of Drake performing in Houston last week. The crowd knows the lyrics to his songs word by word. And he doesn’t even have an album out.
Also check out Drake’s blog October’s Very Own for more videos and stuff from the light skin rapper.
